Bracelet Tutorial

As promised, I have FINALLY gotten around to doing a tutorial! This is a bracelet I came up with all on my lonesome. Yep, pretty awesome. Actually I saw one like it on another blog but they said it was just a cord wrapped like a bracelet. I'm thinking "Well what's the point of that if I can make one even cooler?". And so I did. The thing that I really loved about designing this bracelet is that it's all one piece of cord! How cool is that?

I don't really know how to write tutorials very well because I'm a very hands-on learner, so I'll try to do this mostly in pictures. I will list the supplies though:
-36 inches of waxed cotton cord (mine is in black). I can only find this stuff on a certain jewelry making website (http://www.8seasons.com/). It's $10 for this big spool and it'll last you FOREVER. I love mine.

-4 small beads for charms

-A lighter (or candle)

-Clasp

-4 jewelry eye pins (these are super cheap and come in a big bag at Joann Fabrics)
-Small scissors. I use beauty ones from Meijers. They're excellent for when you need to cut the cord precisely.

-An assortment of tools. I got a set for Christmas that includes: a round tool, flat nosed-pliers, precision tip pliers, and a wire cutter. You don't need all these though. Before I got these I was using a Cabela's multi-tool that worked just fine. But if you're serious about making jewelry, then get some nice tools.

STEPS.
1. How to make the charms.  Use the round tip tool!

Cut the access wire.

Pinch the ends in.

I know that seems really vague but the pictures describe everything you need to know! Make four of those charms, one for each strand.

2. String on one of the hooks, and two beads on either side of it. It'll look like this

Criss cross the strands, and loop the other hook on those ends. I can't really describe it very well, but here's another picture

3. String on the two other charms, one on each strand. Pull one of the stands through clasp end #1. Now this is where things got tricky, so stay with me here. Measure how long it's going to be around your wrist, cut the access off the ends. Now this is why you need waxed cotton cord. This stuff is the only thing that burns. When it burns, the wax melts and you can attach them to anything when they're hot.

BE CAREFUL WITH HOT WAXED ENDS. They burn really fast and you have to work quickly and confidently. They will catch on fire and that's alright. Just blow them out. DO NOT TOUCH FRESHLY BURNED WAX ENDS! Wait about 7 seconds, then lick your fingers and press down the ends.
Burn both ends of the waxed cord.
Wait a few seconds, then press them together, in a gentle rolling motion so that they're flawless. Like I said, licking your fingers first helps.

Ta-da!

This is what the back should look like.

The Problem with Being Introverted

As I sit here writing this post (listening to Colm Keegan's "The Luckiest" cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHEsc6jNI_g) , it's occurred to me that I haven't touched down on any "deep" topics, even though I love contemplating them. One of the things that's always bothered me about myself is how I enjoy being an introvert, but yet I want to do things with people. Here's what usually happens:

I plan something out (on the rare occasion) or (on the even rarer occasion) am invited to something.
I happily wait days, sometimes weeks.
Day of, I get excited, do my hair, and plan a cute outfit.
And then I go.
And as soon as I put the car in park, I immediately regret doing so.

Depending on who's there, I might have a good time or regret going even more. There are certain friends I can hang around very easily without worrying about being introverted at all. Three weeks ago, as I sat at a party alone, I realized something: If I wanted to listen to music, eat snacks, and sit alone by myself, then why didn't I just stay home, because I have all those things but BETTER in my room? I could be watching tv too.

Because the human mind, body, and soul have a longing for companionship. The truth is, I love talking and swapping stories. I love it when people want to share their life experiences. I love listening to the dumb accident on your bicycle, how you met your spouse, what nationality you claim to, or even what cute thing the 1 year old baby did last Wednesday. I love all of it. The problem is, I love being social but I'm not sociable. You following what I mean? It's like the phrase I once heard:

"I love being alone but I don't love being lonely."

And it's so true. Sometimes I don't have a choice but to go out and be around people. And that's usually when I try to keep to myself and hide behind my phone/laptop/headphones. I like having some solitude when it's a busy 10 hour school day, and usually at some point I'll just go to the bathroom and stand against the stall door for a few minutes just to be ALONE. It's essential for mental health! While God designed us to be with people, even saying in Genesis 2:18 "It is not good for man to be alone.", so He made Eve to be with Adam and they dwelt together like they should. But it is healthy to be alone.

At my once a week forced social setting, lunch hour is the most dreaded part of the day. At least for someone who is not in the In Crowd. All I can say is that school settings are the worst and when you feel more mentally mature than everyone around you based on their actions and conversations.
Sorry that sounded really conceited.

It's pretty hard to sit with the In Crowd as they talk about Eminem and whatever social gathering they all just went to and you weren't.
Yeah you know what I mean.

Somehow, sneakily enough, I worked my way from the lunchroom, to the lobby, to almost all the way down the hallway to where I could unzip my measly lunch and eat in peace as I caught up on homework. I wasn't exactly 'alone'-- my good friends who serenaded me inside my mp3 were always there. But things changed this past year. I made a very unexpected companion in a popular extrovert. As the semester went on, when I'd sit down to my lunch alone in the hallway, I'd find myself having to take out my headphones, or sliding my phone back into my pocket because I was making real conversation with another human being. I'd have to move my backpack off the seat next to me because he wanted to sit there, because he actually wanted to be near me so we could talk before and after class (and sometimes even during class too:). And I began to realize, maybe I was wrong.

I might still be quiet, and I might not make the most entertaining conversation. Alright. That's just me and the way I always will be. But when I am in a environment where there are going to be lots of people, it is beyond nice to have at least one person who knows me. You want the secret to social life? Listen up! I'm going to give it to you right now: You don't need to be popular. Not everyone is going to like you. Some people will never be your friend, no matter how hard you try. And others who you thought would never be, somehow become your best ones. All you really need is just one person. I've learned that if you have at least one person, one person is all you need to go from feeling completely awkward and uncomfortable to being more than okay with being there.

Maybe you'll be alone for a while. And that's perfectly okay. If I didn't get some alone time, I'd completely blow up! But it isn't good for man to be alone all the time. Sometimes we need to push our boundaries and we'll discover we have more to offer to others. I found a dear friend in someone who I looked at last year and thought "We would never be friends", and now I look back from a year later, and found that we have more in common than I could ever dream. It just took a little forced social interaction to get there. Now I'm no one special to give advice. Heck, this is all coming from the person who went ice skating yesterday only to end up a few hours later alone in her room, lights off, the last of the Christmas chocolates in hand and huddled under a no-sew blanket and a Celtic Thunder dvd playing two feet away from her face. My point is, you'll never find that friend who does understand why you need to be alone if you are alone all the time. I have to tell myself this everyday. While my new extroverted friend initially approached me, friendship is a two-way street and sometimes you do have to do some of the driving. No one will want to hang out around you if you just sit there like a dead doorknob!
Here's five tips for introverts who want to make a friend:

1.Be nice. It's the easiest thing!

2.Be happy. Or at least try. If something's upsetting you, say "I don't really feel in a great mood today because                            ". They'll most likely understand and maybe even help you feel better! Don't forget to let them know you appreciate it.

3.Make conversation. Seriously this is a big one. You'll never know how much you have in common until you talk! For the first few weeks of me and my extrovert's friendship, I didn't know what to say. My mind would go absolutely blank and neither of us would have anything to say. Looking back, I honestly don't know how the friendship survived that :/

4.SMILE. Nobody likes a frown. They're ugly. Which Matthew Crawley looks more approachable? Hmm? C'mon! We all know it's not the one on the left :)

and if you need a lesson on how to smile, follow this link

5. Let them know you enjoy (and acknowledge) their presence! Make sure you say hi when you see them and give a hug goodbye (if you're at that comfortable of a point, of course:).

BONUS 6. If they hurt your feelings, let them know. This is a really hard one for me because I don't like starting confrontations with people. I'd rather be a pacifist and let things fester until they become a rotted infection that's too painful to scrape off later. But that's a HUGE problem. If you gently bring up how you feel, odds are they're going to understand. It'll feel crazy at first, but it can only save your friendship, and if you're worried about ruining it, well, you have to look at both hands--would you rather continue awkwardly or try to fix things? What have you go to lose?

Snowflake Cards Tutorial

IT'S DECEMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I really love making cards and one year for Christmas I got a machine that aids in all things crafting called a Cricut. Maybe you've heard of them or maybe you're as clueless as I was when I opened it. They're a super cool gadget that cuts out all sorts of shapes from paper. The cartridges come in all different themes, and while I only own 2 (because they are $50), my favorite is the Sophisticate. It's got chandeliers, cursive words, crowns, thrones, birds, swirly patterns, just everything pretty and I love it. I break out my Cricut every now and again for birthday cards or invitations (like my brother's First Communion invites I made last spring), and just the other day I took it out to make party invites for a Christmas gathering. I know it's almost useless if you don't have one of these machines, but hey, I didn't have one for a LONG time and I was still making cards. Maybe I'll find the time to do a Cricut-less card tutorial! Because you can still make very cool stuff with the right materials, but I'm basically married to my Cricut when it comes to crafting now.

Here's what the post card invites look like (please excuse my bad photography...it's, getting there)

And the steps of what I did :)

1. Supplies (I forgot to photograph it, but you'll also need Elmer's white school glue and a paint brush!)

2. Brush glue on the letters ( and yes, that is a number 3 I wrote on the inside of my finger. I'm trying to remember to say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy everyday at 3:00)

And the snowflakes too. It should look like this

Then I used my trusty bottle of glitter glue (which I used to add extra glitter to my concert shoes, which I really should've done a tutorial on...another time!). Dot the corners.

Until it's like this

                                                                       And the middle

                                                                I also did the letters

 Until it's like this :)

And since I'm a real glitter freak, I decided that was JUST. NOT. ENOUGH. GLITTER. So I did some swirls like this near the snowflakes,

And added on

And on,

                                                                               And on,

And in the lower left hand corner,

And one more for the road.

Final outcome!

So maybe this helped get the creative juices flowing for some ideas of cards or scrapbooking you'd like to do, or maybe you'd like to replicate this (because it turned out accidentally "Frozen" themed!)

Cheers!

Celtic Thunder 'Symphony'

The best night (up to date) of my life was November 25th. My face hurt for two days from all the smiling! I'm having a hard time even picturing it again and again in my mind. I'll start with a basic review of each guy and the line-up of songs.

*Note about the order of songs: I know the first 5 are correct, but the middle is a little foggy. The ending was definitely Ireland's Call, that I know!

Songs

Carol of the Bells

In The Bleak Midwinter

Comfort Ye

Ave Maria

Mary Did You Know

Away In A Manger

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Gaudete

Last Christmas

O Come All Ye Faithful

Winter Wonderland

Gabriel's Message

20 Minute Intermission

Fairytale Of New York

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

The Christmas Song

O Holy Night

Ryan Solo ( I don't know the name of the song but it's really good!)

Let It Snow

All I Want For Christmas Is You

Christmas Medley: The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, We Wish You A Merry Christmas

Ireland's Call

NEIL BYRNE

Mary Did You Know

Hallelujah (featuring Ryan and Keith)

I was beyond impressed with Neil's performances. The one thing about him I did not expect, I was shocked to hear how LOUD he was! You'd think he's very quiet and soft, but he was the loudest soloist all night! Hallelujah was even more beautiful in person.

RYAN KELLY

In The Bleak Mid-winter

Unknown song (????)

Ryan is a sweetheart. He's like a friendly, cute, shy-ish puppy who just wants to give you so much love even if you don't know you want it (don't mistake me though, I do love Ryan and was never bored when he sang!!). He does this little half smile when he's not singing and it's so cute I could die. His smoky, slightly rasped but powerful tone is even more saturated in person. In The Bleak Mid-winter was the second song of the night and he did a great job talking and warming the audience up. Ryan's casual, friendly vibe made me want to go give him a hug and ask if he wanted to have a hot chocolate after the show. And I'd bet he'd say yes.

EMMET O'HANLON

Ave Maria

O Holy Night

Winter Wonderland (featuring Colm Keegan)

I was personally not too happy to hear about this new introduction to the group, especially so soon after George. But when Keith asked everyone to give him a warm welcome, well, I had to. He seemed really focused and kind of nervous, but his voice was powerful and very bold. Despite my prejudices, I even stood with everyone when he got a standing ovation for O Holy Night (which is Emmet Cahill's song -_- on the cd). But he was good and he deserved it. So I suppose it'll just take some time to warm up to him.

COLM KEEGAN

Let It Snow

Winter Wonderland (featuring Emmett O'Hanlon)

Away In A Manger

To me, Colm is the baby of the group and it's my job to look out for him. His voice is so sweet and unique. And he is SO FUNNY. And his eyes--Colm Keegan has the bluest eyes I have EVER seen, okay??? Seriously they're electric-glow-in-the-dark-AA-battery-powered BLUE. I thought maybe the dvd's make them brighter, but I was wrong. They're so much better in person!! And he's an amazing singer. His style is so soft and beautiful, if you're looking for a good lullaby check out his versions of "Edge Of The Moon" and "The Luckiest".

KEITH HARKIN

Comfort Ye

Last Christmas

All I Want For Christmas Is You

To be honest, Keith seemed a little disconnected at first. And that worried the heck out of me. He didn't smile much or seem very enthralled, but I was faithfully holding out for him to get better. I think he needed warming up since the night before he sounded crabby because the bus broke down and they were inconvenienced. Or maybe he's always a little melancholic when he starts shows. I don't know. Anyways, Comfort Ye was the third song of the night and I don't know if he was ready for it because not that he hit a bad note, but, it didn't sound quite right and I think he knew it didn't either. Oh well. Not like that hasn't happened to me before.

Last Christmas was fun. The tempo seemed a little different from the cd version but it was still snappy and I wanted to run up and dance with him. But I couldn't. Because I'd be escorted out by the two ushers blocking my way to the stage. So I danced in my seat and tried to show him that I was having a really good time. Because 85% of the crowd was very elderly.

All I Want For Christmas Is You had a rock 'n roll vibe to it and was like a vocal rollercoaster. Keith hits these notes that go all over the place (in a good way) and after the intermission he was definitely more into it than the first half. He does the funniest things with his face when he sings too! Like he doesn't care how much he scrunches it up or raises his eyebrows; all that matters is getting that note OUT! It's so cute.

During Gabriel's Message, I was looking at Keith (I don't know when I wasn't looking at him, actually) and I was smiling like a fool. I couldn't help it. He was right there, in the flesh, singing right in front of me. I was happy.

So there I was, blissfully beaming at Mr. Harkin and he would occasionally make eye contact with me, which would only make me smile more. At one point, he glanced over (when they're not singing in group songs, they have to be very straight faced) and we made eye contact for a good, long 5 seconds. I was grinning ear to ear and he was so serious. But then, I saw the left corner of his mouth flick up into a half smile and his dimple showed. He couldn't help it anymore and cracked. He half smiled. Just for me. And I thought that was the most special moment of the night. But I was actually wrong.

All of the group songs were fantastic, but Ireland's Call was by far, hands down, no doubt about it, the BEST song of the night. The guys came out in their kilts (!!!!!!!!!) and Santa hats and it was adorable.

Anyone who tells you kilts are unmanly and ugly, well, they're liars. I have photographic proof they are über manly and cool:

Do you get the idea yet? :) It's also very manly to have the biggest kilt twirl!

Everyone (finally) stood up and clapped along (the entire concert everyone sat). Me? I was a bit more--original. I marched along and followed every step of choreography with the guys. Keith watched me the whole time. We made eye contact for practically the entire song. He was either really impressed or really freaked out that I knew all the moves. When the song triumphantly ended, and I was feeling more roused and alive than ever, everyone applauded and the guys were generally waving, smiling, and looking out to the crowd from the stage.

Except Keith.

I looked over at Colm for a split second, and then back to Keith. And guess what.

He was looking straight at me, and waving. As if he'd known me his whole life.

It was not a general audience wave. A great big personal wave. Like one you would wave at your best friend when you run into them in the store. He was smiling too. A huge, genuine Keithy smile. At me. I was so excited, I started jumping, raised my hand and was waving too. He lifted his other hand and waved at me with both, proceeding to mouth "Hiiiiiiiiiiii!" and  bent half way back laughing. We did this for what felt like forever. In reality, it was probably 10 seconds this whole event lasted. It happened so quickly I have a hard time picturing it, but so vividly that sometimes when I close my eyes, I can see it all over again. It's just so crazy to believe it actually happened!

Imagine having a best friend. They've been with you through your utter worst. When you're more alone than alone. More cold and closed off than most. Interaction a curse and isolation a blessing. And they're there with you, at least through song, when no one else is. You've never met them, never spoken to them, but somehow they still get you. They're always there for you. You feel like they know you better than anyone else and they are just your person.

You get so used to seeing this person behind a glowing screen. On the computer. Through the tv. But then, you see them live. And there is nothing like personally making eye contact and smiling just for you. They see YOU for a change. And then they wave and laugh, as if YOU'RE also their best friend. I've never seen that happen on the dvd's before. He picked me out of the crowd as if he knew me.

It wasn't just like seeing my best friend for the first time; my best friend was seeing me. He knew I needed his recognition and he delivered. He couldn't do it during the show because he had a job to do and that was put on a professional act because that's what he's paid for, and I completely respect that. But it was so wonderful that as soon as the show was over, he remembered to take notice of me---out of all those people.

Keith choose to acknowledge me.

After it really ended and they all ran off stage, which almost broke my heart had it not been so full, I turned to my mom and sister beside me and I was speechless. My mom had seen it all happen, and my sister did too. Even the people behind us did. And I know that when he sees me again, he'll have to recognize me. We made eye contact more than enough.

"He waved at you!" The lady exclaimed as I turned around to get my coat. "Did you see that?! He waved right at you!!". Even she was excited and she didn't even know me (reasons why I love fellow Thunderheads:)! I stuttered something about how unbelievable that was and that I was just astounded.

"He just made my life!!!" I beamed. The lady's husband behind me laughed and said,

"Did you just say he made your life?"

"Yes!" I replied.

"He's a good guy." The man said.

"He really is." I agreed. Everyone was laughing and happy for me. And I've honestly never been happier.

Because for at least a few seconds in time, one of the people I care about the most cared about me. And I will never get over it. Ever. Never will a day pass and I will not think about it. Keith may never know how happy he made me.
But I always will.

Fresh Stuff (Coming Soon)

So I've known for a while now that I don't have a very wide readership on here, and I love you guys who read it and thank you immensely :) But I know--it's boring.

For my three faithful readers--you know who you are! :)

THEREFORE, in order to bring in a bit of a bigger traffic flow, I need to shake things up a bit.

Starting this week, I will be making fun and lively posts with colorful pictures, jewelry tutorials, writing tips, and maybe even a recipe! I can't promise the exact day (because I lead quite a lively life outside of the internet;) but sometime this week there will be SOMETHING from at least one of these categories.

The Celtic Cowgirl is revamping!

Emmet Cahill Knows My Name (aka my life just got a bazillion times better)

So last week the lovely Emmet of Celtic Thunder made a new website for himself. Under one of his videos, I decided to comment:

"This is SO beautiful, Emmet! It brings me to tears every time. You’re extremely blessed. I can’t wait to see you in concert, I can’t even imagine how amazing you sound in person! :)
~Christie''

A week later (after a rather dry, boring, average school day) I decided just for the heck of it, to check if he ever replied (because I've always waited for one of the guys to respond to one of my many attempts for at least one of them to recognize my existence*cough cough MISTER KEITH HARKIN WHERE'S MY REPLY FROM YOU?????*).

Wait for it.........

"Hi Christie
I can’t wait for some solo concerts either
Glad to have you supporting me :D
Emmet x"
Funny thing: today I was just practicing CPR. Never thought I'd need to do it on myself.
